Medium Duty Twin Coulter assemblies are a popular way of setting up a machine when large pressures are not required, for example cutting melons and wireweed.  The Manutec Medium Duty Twin Coulter Assembly is are a dual disc assembly that runs on one single frame, a single wheel version is also available for the “odd” tyne.  The coulter discs are positioned side by side on independent stub axles.  Stub axles of different lengths are available for all common spacings and can be made to order for custom spacings.   The assembly has one tension spring that provides the down pressure.  The springs are available in both a light and medium duty pressure versions.  The assembly is designed so that it can use either 16”, 18” or 20” coulter discs.  The most popular size disc is the 18” and this size has the most options available in terms of disc shapes.  The discs are all located on a narrow cast hub with a HT stud pattern and LM tapered bearings.  Each hub is greaseable and is also fitted with the Manutec special dust exclusion seal and a Heavy Duty steel cover to protect against rocks.  The benefits of the Medium Duty Twin Coulters are;

  • Value for money, twin systems are less expensive to fit than single systems and the Medium Duty model is less expensive to fit than the heavy duty model.
  • Accuracy, if set up correctly twin coulter assemblies will track accurately in front of the tyne, including during turns
  • Can be re-set to new spacings however new stubs may be required if making large changes
  • Easy access for maintenance, positioned across the front of the machine, coulter assemblies are easy to access to do routine and emergency maintenance.  Repair by replacement is a quick option with coulters and if spare parts are carried most breakdowns can be repaired in minutes.

Medium Duty Twin Coulters come in two variants Set Under and Set Forward.  The Set Under variant has an arm that bends forward so as to bring the disc position forward under the mounting bar.  The set back variant has an arm that comes straight down from the bracket so that discs end up set back behind to the mounting bar.  (See pictures below)

MEDIUM SINGLE COULTER ASSEMBLIES

Medium Duty Single Coulter assemblies are basically the same as the medium twins above with the exception that each assembly is now only carrying a single disc.  Most machines will need at least one single assembly to cover the “odd” tyne.   The assembly has one large heavy duty compression spring that provides the down pressure.   The assembly is designed so that it can use either 16”, 18” or 20” coulter discs.  The most popular size disc is the 18” and this size has the most options available in terms of disc shapes.  The discs are all located on a narrow cast hub with a HT stud pattern and LM tapered bearings.  Each hub is greaseable and is also fitted with the Manutec special dust exclusion seal and a Heavy Duty steel cover to protect against rocks.  The benefits of the Medium Duty Single Coulters are;

  • Greater down pressure per disc.
  • Each disc 100% independent, ie not affected by movements of other discs.
  • Accuracy, if set up correctly the single coulters will track accurately in front of the tyne, including during turns (delayed swivel mechanism)
  • Can be re-set to new spacings by simply readjusting the bracket position.
  • Good for wider spacings.
  • Easy access for maintenance, positioned across the front of the machine, coulter assemblies are easy to access to do routine and emergency maintenance.  Repair by replacement is a quick option with coulters and if spare parts are carried most breakdowns can be repaired in minutes.
  • Less expensive than the heavy duty single disc option.

As per the twin model Medium Duty Single Coulters come in two variants Set Under and Set Forward.  The Set Under variant has an arm that bends forward so as to bring the disc position forward under the mounting bar.  The set back variant has an arm that comes straight down from the bracket so that discs end up set back behind to the mounting bar.  (See pictures below)

Mounting Medium Duty Coulter Assemblies.  Medium Duty Coulters are normally mounted across the front of the machine, however on some machines they can also be fitted inside the frame.  The most common method is by fitting a new toolbar either 3” or 4” RHS across the front of the machine.  The toolbar can either be fixed (welded in place) or detachable.  Manutec does a range of extension arms and U-Bolts that are available so as to easily set up a detachable tool bar.  Generally toolbars are set up at around 350mm off the front bar of the machine.  In many cases coulters can also be attached directly to the front frame, to do this there must be enough clear space behind the back of the disc and the front of the tynes on the front row.  Often a combination of mounting methods needs to be used because of the limitations of some machines.    A mounting bracket and either 3” or 4” U-bolts are supplied with each coulter assembly to allow fitment to either 3” or 4” frames. Extension arms and plates and heavy duty U-bolts are also available depending on what mounting options are used.
