Hydraulic Coulters

HEAVY DUTY TWIN HYDRAULIC COULTER ASSEMBLIES

Please note these units are currently undergoing field testing and are expected to be available at some time in 2014.  At the bottom of this page are some pictures of bench testing and we hope to bring you more images soon as testing progress’s.

Hydraulic Twin Coulter assemblies are the most popular way of setting up new style machine with hydraulic tynes where the frame height is fixed.  The Manutec Hydraulic Heavy Duty Twin Coulter Assembly is are a dual disc assembly that runs on one single frame, a single wheel version is also available for the “odd” tyne.  The coulter discs are positioned side by side on independent stub axles.  Stub axles of different lengths are available for all common spacings and can be made to order for custom spacings.   The assembly has one two way hydraulic cylinder that provides the down pressure and that also enables the coulters to be raised for transport.   The assembly is designed so that it can use either 16”, 18” or 20” coulter discs.  The most popular size disc is the 18” and this size has the most options available in terms of disc shapes.  The discs are all located on a narrow cast hub with a HT stud pattern and LM tapered bearings.  Each hub is greaseable and is also fitted with the Manutec special dust exclusion seal and a Heavy Duty steel cover to protect against rocks.  The coulter arm also has a skid plate under the seal area to protect the seal. The benefits of the Heavy Duty Twin Coulters are;

  • Can be fitted to bars with a fixed height that utilise hydraulics to raise and lower their tynes.
  • Can be deployed and lifted from the cab.
  • Capable of large cutting pressure (>300lbs)
  • Value for money, twin systems are less expensive to fit than single systems.
  • Accuracy, if set up correctly twin coulter assemblies will track accurately in front of the tyne, including during turns (delayed swivel mechanism)
  • Can be re-set to new spacings however new stubs will be required
  • Easy access for maintenance, positioned across the front of the machine, coulter assemblies are easy to access to do routine and emergency maintenance.  Repair by replacement is a quick option with coulters and if spare parts are carried most breakdowns can be repaired in minutes.
  • Easy to adjust pressure from the cab.
  • Easy to pin up if not required, a quick release mechanism allows the coulters to be pinned up when not in use.  This same facility can also be used to adjust the angle when setting up the machine.

HEAVY DUTY SINGLE HYDRAULIC COULTER ASSEMBLIES

Please note these units are currently undergoing field testing and are expected to be available at some time in 2014.

Single Hydraulic Coulter assemblies are basically the same as the twins above with the exception that each assembly is now only carrying a single disc.  Most machines will need at least one single assembly to cover the “odd” tyne.   The assembly has one 2 way hydraulic cylinder that provides the down pressure.   The assembly is designed so that it can use either 16”, 18” or 20” coulter discs.  The most popular size disc is the 18” and this size has the most options available in terms of disc shapes.  The discs are all located on a narrow cast hub with a HT stud pattern and LM tapered bearings.  Each hub is greaseable and is also fitted with the Manutec special dust exclusion seal and a Heavy Duty steel cover to protect against rocks.  The coulter arm also has a skid plate under the seal area to protect the seal. The benefits of the Heavy Duty Single Coulters are;

  • Can be deployed and lifted from the cab
  • Greater down pressure per disc.
  • Each disc 100% independent, ie not affected by movements of other discs.
  • Accuracy, if set up correctly the single coulters will track accurately in front of the tyne, including during turns (delayed swivel mechanism)
  • Can be re-set to new spacings by simply readjusting the bracket position.
  • Good for wider spacings.
  • Easy access for maintenance, positioned across the front of the machine, coulter assemblies are easy to access to do routine and emergency maintenance.  Repair by replacement is a quick option with coulters and if spare parts are carried most breakdowns can be repaired in minutes.
  • Easy to adjust pressure, pressure is adjusted by screwing in the nut on the compression spring.
  • Easy to pin up if not required, a quick release mechanism allows the coulters to be pinned up when not in use.  This same facility can also be used to adjust the angle when setting up the machine.

Mounting Heavy Duty Hydraulic Coulter Assemblies.  Coulters are normally mounted across the front of the machine, however on some machines they can also be fitted inside the frame.  The most common method is by fitting a new toolbar either 3” or 4” RHS across the front of the machine.  The toolbar can either be fixed (welded in place) or detachable.  Manutec does a range of extension arms and U-Bolts that are available so as to easily set up a detachable tool bar.  Generally toolbars are set up at around 350mm off the front bar of the machine.  In many cases coulters can also be attached directly to the front frame, to do this there must be enough clear space behind the back of the disc and the front of the tynes on the front row.  Often a combination of mounting methods needs to be used because of the limitations of some machines.    Heavy Duty Coulters can also be mounted on their own individual extension arm as an option.  All U-bolts are supplied with each coulter assembly to allow fitment to either 3” or 4” frames. Extension arms and plates and heavy duty U-bolts are also available depending on what mounting options are used.  Hydraulic cables and accessories are not provided as part of the kit at this stage.
